What to see

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME, IN ARTS AND CULTURE

Lefkada is famous mainly for its beautiful and endless beaches, but its beauties do not end here.

The love of Lefkada for the arts and culture, but also the long and turbulent history of the island, have left their mark everywhere with the most important the castle of Agia Mavra .

It has an area of about 25000 sqm and can be visited from its western gate. In its interior there are ruins mainly of the Venetian period and in its northern part, ruins of the church of I.N. Pantocrator built on the site of a mosque by Morosini in 1684 during the Venetian War.

In the castle there was a majestic church of Agia Mavra that was destroyed in 1810 as the English were trying to occupy the island. Today in the southeast of the castle there is a small church dedicated to Agia Mavra and her husband Agios Timotheos.

The prefecture of Lefkada, although the smallest in Greece, holds the record for most museums (in proportion to its area and population). Visitors have the opportunity to travel back in time through the exhibits of more than 20 museum and exhibition spaces.

The last jewel of Lefkada is the Museum of Angelos Sikelianos, housed in the house where our great national poet was born and raised. The museum is located in the old town of Lefkada and is one of the attractions that is definitely worth seeing.
